FAQs
What size hole do I drill for an M6 carriage bolt?
Drill a 6mm clearance hole through the timber, then tap the bolt through so the square neck seats in the wood before tightening the nut.
Should I use a washer?
Yes – fit a washer under the nut to spread the load and stop the nut pulling into the timber.
Carriage bolts or coach screws?
Carriage bolts pass right through both pieces and are clamped with a nut – the strongest option. Coach screws are used where you can only reach one side.
Are they suitable for outdoors?
Bright zinc plating gives light protection for internal or sheltered use. For exposed external work, choose galvanised or stainless bolts.
