Heavy-duty M12 x 160mm coach screws with a hex flange head and yellow zinc finish, in a trade box of 25. A modern replacement for traditional DIN 571 coach screws, they drive straight in with an impact driver – the single slash point starts fast and cuts down on splitting, even close to the edge of the timber.

At M12 this is the heaviest timber connections – beams, posts, sleepers and large structural brackets. The built-in flange washer spreads the load and clamps the joint tight, so there’s no need for a separate washer. A matching socket driver is included in every box.

Key features

  • Hex flange head with built-in washer – no separate washer needed
  • Single slash point for fast starts and reduced splitting
  • Partially threaded for strong clamping of timber joints
  • Zinc & yellow passivated finish for improved corrosion resistance
  • 16mm hex socket drive – power tool compatible
  • Socket driver bit included in every box

Applications

Timber to timber, ironmongery to timber and heavy brackets – fencing, decking sub-frames, pergolas, ledgers, gates, sleepers and outbuildings. They can also be used into brick or block with a suitably sized nylon plug. Corrosion rating 2 suits occasionally damp, rural and sheltered locations; for coastal or permanently wet work choose stainless steel.

FAQs

Do I need to drill a pilot hole for M12 coach screws?

The slash point is designed to drive without a pilot hole in most softwoods. In hardwoods, dense timber or close to the end of a board, drill a pilot hole to avoid splitting and reduce driving torque.

Do I need washers with these?

No – the hex flange head has a built-in washer face that spreads the load and clamps the joint, so a separate washer isn’t needed.

What size socket do they take?

M12 coach screws in this range take a 16mm socket. A matching socket driver bit is included in every box, so you can drive them straight away with an impact driver.

Can I use them outdoors?

The zinc & yellow passivated finish has a corrosion rating of 2 – suitable for occasionally damp, rural and sheltered areas such as fencing and garden structures. For coastal, marine or treated timber that stays wet, use a stainless steel fixing.
